Every year on October 17, people around the world recognize the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This day raises awareness about the daily struggles faced by families experiencing poverty and calls on communities to work together toward solutions.
As educators, we see firsthand how poverty can impact children and families in our care. Understanding these challenges helps us create more supportive, inclusive, and compassionate learning environments.
The Travelling Tales and ELQI Libraries have books are resources available for both children and adults about things like food insecurity, being unhoused, and other tender topics.
The ELQI and Early Learnng Resource Program offers Bridges Out of Poverty training. This professional learning opportunity helps:
Build understanding of the hidden rules of economic class
Highlight the barriers the families in poverty face
Share strategies to support families in ways that lessen stress and build resilence
Offer approaches to better support children and families in childcare
Strengthen our capacity for empathy and equity in practice
