As Registered Early Childhood Educators, we often spend some time discussing, not only the purpose of, but the importance of documentation.
Why do we document throughout our work with children and families? Well, the answer could be for a number of different reasons! Some of the most frequent responses include:
- to make children’s theories and learning visible
- to dig deeper into children’s interests
- to document relationships (not just between people, but also with the materials and environment)
- to use as research (yes, this is a very broad point as what is being researched and trying to be understood could be a number of different things)
What else would you add to this list for a reason you document observations with the children and families you work with?
One of our Early Learning Coordinators shared this piece of documentation she completed with the family and program these children attend. I would like to extend our gratitude to the family for allowing me to share this documentation in this space as well with all of you.
